A standby generator is an engine that sits outside all year and is expected to start cold and run for days. It needs the same care as a car, once a year, whether or not it has run.
What a yearly service includes
- Oil and oil filter change
- Air filter and spark plugs on the manufacturer's schedule
- Battery test and replacement when needed
- Fuel system and connection check
- Transfer switch check
- A full load test, so you know it carries the house, not just idles
- Controller firmware and the weekly self-test schedule
- Cleaning debris, leaves, and nests from the enclosure
When to service
Once a year at minimum. The best timing in Putnam is late summer, ahead of hurricane season and the winter storms, and again after any outage where the unit ran for more than a day or two.
Service plans
Most installers offer a yearly plan that bundles the service visit and priority response during outages. Ask about it; after a big storm, plan customers get seen first.
